Biography
William V of Montferrat became involved in eastern Mediterranean politics after his son, William Longsword, traveled to the Latin East to marry Sibylla, heiress to the kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1179, he sealed an alliance with the Byzantine empire. 1183 he left the affairs of his marquisate in the hands of his sons and traveled to the Latin East. Captured by Saladin at the battle of Hattin, he was released in 1189, dying two years later.
