Summary

At around the time of his departure on crusade, Rainald bishop of Angers visited the monks of Saint Nicholas at Angers in order to pray. While there he heard the requests of the monks of Saint Nicholas of Angers that he should give them as alms the house which had recently been established at Azé and the rights to the parish in Le Geneteil. Rainald acceded to their wishes and allowed them to establish twelve monks in Azé. With the same text of the Gospels with which they had invested him bishop, he invests them with the gift. In return, they promise that one monk shall forever pray to God and say masses for his soul and those of his ancestors and for a safe journey and return for the bishop and his companions.

Text

In nomine Sanctae et Individuae Trinitalis.

Ego Rainaldus, Dei gratia Andegavorum humilis episcopus, tam praesentis quam futuri temporis hominibus notum esse desidero.

Quod, cum pararem visitare sanctam civitatem Christi Hierusalem, et circa discessum meum, ad ecclesiam Sancti Nicholai, causa postulandi patrocinium pii Confessoris et beneficium fratrum nostrorum monachorum ibi Deo famulantium, venirem, suscepio beneficio a fratribus in capitulo, ipsi supplicaverunt mihi, orantes ut sibi concederem quamdam elemosinariam domum quae aliquantulo temporis ante constituta erat infra metas parrochiae Azei, quae parrochia corum erat, in vico Genesteil, ad faciendam de domo illa ecclesiam in qua monachi Deo deservirent assidue.

Itaque ego, inclinatus eorum precibus, concessi illis postulata in quantum ad me pertinebat, salvo jure parrochiae ecclesiae, annuente Ulgerio, archidiacono meo, et Radulfo archipresbitero;

Acta sunt haec omnia in capitulum Sancti Nicholai, sexta feria prima post Ascensionem Domini, anno ab Incarnatione Domini millesimo centesimo vigesimo. Videntibus et audientibus venerabilibus personis quae cum domino episcopo aderant, istis scilicet : Normanno Sancti Mauricii decano, Ulgerio archidiacono et magistro scolarum Sancti Mauricii, Willelmo archidiacono, Radulfo archipresbitero, Witberto, Willelmo Ficeum Camilliacensi decano, Otberto de Balne, Petro Fulberti filio, Rainaldo capellano Sancti Nicholai, Mathaeo capellano Sancti Laurentii de Morteriis ; De laicis : Pipino theloneario, Johanne homine Guarini Burgevini, Rainaldo de Sartrino et Pictavino secretario, famulis nostris ;
