Charter of Thierry of Flanders, 1139

Year

1139

Expedition Date

Based on the interpreted dates of this and Thierry's other charters of the time period, it appears that he was gone from his domains from September 1138-December 1139.

Summary

Thierry of Flanders acknowledges that during the time when he had gone to Jerusalem for the good of his soul, his wife Sibilla had overseen the gift of Emmerin, held by Walter of Voormezele and his brothers and sisters, to the monks of the abbey of Anchin. When he returned, Thierry confirmed this gift at the request of abbot Gosuin.

Text

Ego Theodericus, Dei gratia comes Flandrensium, eiusdemque inspiratione paci et quieti ęcclesię cooperator devotus, omni studio prospicere cupio, ne Aquiscinctensis ecclesia de terris aut redditibus ei a Waltero Formosellensi in villa Amerin collatis, ullam in posterum iniustitiam aut vexationem patiatur. Notum sit igitur omnibus tam futuris quam presentibus quod, cum Ierosolimam pro remedio animę meę profectus essem, Walterus Formosellensis in Brugensi castro coram baronibus Flandrie per manum Sibille comitisse uxoris mee Aquiscinctensi ecclesie contradidit, quicquid in villa Amerin tam ipse quam fratres eius et sorores possederant, annuentibus eisdem fratribus suis Adam, Willelmo, Johanne, Isaac, Gozuino, et sororibus Bertha, Mabilia, a quibus ipse Walterus aliarum rerum data commutatione huius rei assensum impetraverat, suscipiente autem idem donum domno Gozuino Aquiscinctensi abbate. Quo facto, idem Walterus et supranominati fratres et sorores eius omnia que Aquiscinctensi ecclesie contulerant guerpiverunt et abiuraverunt, data scilicet fide pollicentes et iure iurando firmantes omnia que in villa Amerin possederant sive in terris cultis vel incultis sive in pratis sive in nemoribus sive in decimis sive in hominibus casatis sive in omni omnino re, nunquam se amplius reclamaturos aut quolibet modo ecclesiam per hanc occasionem vexaturos, quinetiam contra omnem aliorum reclamationem aut calumniam defensionem Aquiscinctensi ecclesie ipsum Walterum exhibiturum.

Ut ergo hoc perpetuo ratum haberetur, confirmatum est sigillo Sibille comitisse coniugis mee et testimonio Rogeri prepositi Brugensis ; Frumaldi Brugensis ; Ivani Gandensis ; Fulconis cancellarii; Henrici castellani de Broburc ; Willelmi de Bonleirs ; Stepponis ; Theoderici; Thietbaldi dapiferi; Balduini Bote ; Lambini de Vuingin ; Walteri de Sobringehem ; Ernulfi de Dringehem ; Balduini Canis ; Bruneli de Haleuuin ; Balduini de Douia ; Roberti Pulian ; Hugelini; Lamberti de Ridesfort. Actum est anno incarnati Verbi M C XXXVIIII, ante reditum meum.

Postquam vero Deo miserante in pace reversus sum, in eodem prefato anno adiit me domnus abbas Aquiscinctensis Gozuinus, postulans ut ea que me absente acta sunt, sigillo meo et testimonio confirmarem. Ego igitur, rei veritate a baronibus meis qui interfuerunt certissime comperta, actionem hanc secundum petitionem eius testimonio meo et sigilli impressione confirmo.

Huius autem mee confirmationis testes sunt: Leonius abbas Sancti Bertini; Ivanus Gandensis ; Christianus castellanus de Dicasmudhe; Balduinus de Comminis; Walterus Uedherlugene ; Balduinus de Baliul; Froaldus de Clenleirs; Walterus frater eius ; Willelmus de Gulesin ; Alelmus Atrebatensis.
