Charter of Thierry of Flanders, 1142

Year

1142

Expedition Date

Based on the interpreted dates of Thierry's other charters of the time period, it appears that he was gone from his domains from September 1138-December 1139. This charter refers to that previous journey.

Summary

Thierry of Flanders, hoping to make a visit to the Holy Places, had set out for Jerusalem, leaving his lands and his children under the control of his wife and his son Baldwin. While he was away, his wife Sibilla and his son Baldwin had overseen the transfer of a place called Wulpen by a certain Alnothus and his family to the monastery of Dunes, partly for cash and partly as alms. This was done with the understanding that the grant, or its fair value, would ultimately be given back to Alnothus's young illegitimate son when he came of age. This was done and the value of the lands was agreed under the oversight of judges. When Thierry returned from the journey, he heard and believed the testimony of many regarding the matter, and so that the matter might be confirmed he affixed his seal.

Text
