Summary

During his visit to Jerusalem in 1172, Henry the Lion, duke of Saxony and Bavaria, makes gifts to the Holy Sepulchre through the hands of Amalric of Nelse, patriarch of Jerusalem. For the remission of his sins and the sins of his wife Mathilda, "daughter of the most glorious king of the English (Henry II)," Henry gives three lamps to burn in the church of the Holy Sepulchre: one to burn in the presence of the Holy Sepulchre itself, one in the calvary chapel, and one in the chapel of the Holy Cross. In order to provide 500 bezants the endowment to purchase oil for these lamps, Henry buys the house of Michael Furbitor, next to the walls of the Holy Sepulchre.
