Charter of Enguerran, Dean of the church of Amiens, 1180

Crusader

Year

1180

Summary

At the request of Ralph of Duri and his wife, Agnes, the dean of the church of Amiens, Enguerran, had a scribe record an arrangement made between the church of Amiens and the couple, which was made before Ralph set out to Jerusalem. Ralph granted lands held in Duri to Amiens, which the church was to hold in perpetuity after his death; however, if Ralph died before his wife then Agnes would retain the land until her passing. To complicate matters further, though, only half of the other half was held by Ralph and Agnes as Ralph's brother Peter owed him 30 l. of either Arras or Paris. In the event of Ralph's death, his brother's half would be retained by Agnes until Peter had repaid the sum owed or he defaulted and Amiens paid for it.

Text
