Charter of Chalo the Red, 1119

Crusader

Year

1119

Summary

Chalo the Red of Vivonne renounces the rights he and his family hold in their base of authority (curte) in Champagné-St-Hilaire. The monks of St Hilary claim that Chalo has usurped these rights, and it is for this reason that Pope Calixtus II has excommunicated Chalo. The charter then goes on to note that Chalo is about to set out on pilgrimage [a second charter from 1128 makes clear that his intention was to head to Jerusalem] and that when he returns the agreement is to be upheld. As a public display of this renouncement of rights, Chalo places his belt on the altar of St Hilary.

Text
