Biography

In 1169, Stephen was approached as a potential match for Sibylla, heiress to the kingdom of Jerusalem. According to William of Tyre, Stephen's subsequent journey to the kingdom in 1171 in the company of Hugh III of Burgundy and Stephen II of Auxonne was taken in order to pursue this marriage. According to Robert of Torigni, he was bringing the money raised by Philip Augustus for the defense of Jerusalem. In any case, he did not marry Sibylla.
